Lyophilized (freeze-dried) research peptides are prepared for study by reconstituting them into solution. The steps below describe general laboratory practice for research reference materials — they are not use directions of any kind.
What you are working with
Peptides ship as a dry powder under vacuum in a sealed vial. In this state they are highly stable. Once dissolved, they are far more sensitive to heat, light, and time — which is why reconstitution is done only when the material is needed for research and the balance is stored cold.
Bacteriostatic vs. sterile water
Research protocols commonly reconstitute with bacteriostatic water (water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which suppresses microbial growth so a multi-use vial keeps longer) or with sterile water for single-session work. We stock bacteriostatic water as a companion research material — a common rule of thumb is one vial of solvent for roughly every two vials of lyophilized peptide, though the exact volume depends on the concentration a protocol calls for.
General reconstitution steps
- Let both vials reach room temperature; wipe stoppers with alcohol.
- Draw the chosen volume of solvent and introduce it slowly down the inside wall of the peptide vial — never squirt directly onto the powder.
- Let it sit; swirl gently. Do not shake — agitation can shear peptide chains.
- Allow the powder to dissolve fully into a clear solution before use.
Storage & stability
- Sealed, lyophilized: cold and dark; freezer for long-term storage.
- Reconstituted: refrigerate (do not freeze/thaw repeatedly) and keep out of light; solution is less stable than powder.
- Always log the lot number and keep the Certificate of Analysis with your records.
Frequently asked questions
Why not shake the vial?
Vigorous shaking creates foam and shear forces that can degrade peptide chains. Swirling gently until dissolved is standard practice.
How much bacteriostatic water do I use?
It depends on the concentration a research protocol targets. A common companion ratio is one solvent vial per ~two peptide vials, but the exact volume sets the concentration and is chosen per protocol.
