What benzyl alcohol does

Benzyl alcohol at 0.9% v/v is a preservative with bacteriostatic activity — it inhibits bacterial proliferation rather than sterilising. Its presence is what allows a reconstituted vial to be accessed more than once within a defined in-use window without the container becoming a growth medium. Sterile water contains no preservative, so a container that has been opened offers no protection against contamination introduced at the septum.

Compatibility considerations

Benzyl alcohol is a small organic solvent, and for a minority of peptides it is worth confirming compatibility against the material's own documentation before selecting it as the diluent. Where compatibility is unknown, laboratory practice is to prepare fresh in sterile water for single-session work.

Handling either diluent

Both are added slowly down the vial wall rather than injected directly onto the lyophilized cake, and the vial is swirled rather than shaken — mechanical shear and foaming are avoidable causes of peptide damage. Full mechanics are in reconstitution and storage.
